Ingredients

  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • For decorating: candy eyes, orange/black/purple sprinkles, mini chocolate chips, melted chocolate (dark or white, dyed if desired), small candies like M&Ms or candy corn

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add egg and vanilla; mix well.
  2. In another bowl, whisk flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add to the wet mixture, mixing just until combined.
  3. For drop cookies, scoop dough into balls and place on a parchment-lined baking sheet. For shaped cookies, roll dough to ¼-inch thick and cut with Halloween cookie cutters.
  4. Press in candy eyes or sprinkles before baking if you want them set into the cookie.
  5. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 8–10 minutes or until edges are lightly golden.
  6. Cool completely before decorating with icing, melted chocolate, or extra toppings.

Notes

For best results, chill dough before cutting shapes to prevent spreading. Decorated cookies are best enjoyed within 3 days.
