Ingredients

For the Hamburger Steaks

  • 1½ lb (680 g) ground beef (80/20 for best flavor)

  • 1 large egg

  • ½ cup milk

  • ½ cup breadcrumbs or crushed crackers

  • 1 tsp salt

  • ½ tsp black pepper

  • ½ tsp garlic powder

  • ½ tsp onion powder

For the Onion Gravy

  • 2 tbsp butter

  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced

  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour

  • 2 cups beef broth

  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce

  • Salt & pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Make the patties
    In a large bowl, combine ground beef, egg, milk, breadcrumbs, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. Mix gently until just combined.
    Shape into oval or round patties.

  2. Brown the hamburger steaks
    Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add patties and cook 3–4 minutes per side until well browned.
    Remove patties from skillet and set aside.

  3. Cook the onions
    In the same skillet, melt butter. Add sliced onions and cook over medium heat until soft and lightly caramelized (about 8–10 minutes).

  4. Make the gravy
    Sprinkle flour over onions and stir for 1 minute. Slowly pour in beef broth, stirring constantly to avoid lumps.
    Add Worcestershire sauce and season with salt and pepper.

  5. Simmer
    Return hamburger steaks to the skillet. Spoon gravy over them, cover, and simmer on low for 15–20 minutes until tender and fully cooked.
