Ingredients

  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp nutmeg
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 cups grated apples
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts (optional)
  • For the frosting: 1/2 cup butter, 1 cup brown sugar, 1/4 cup milk, 2 cups powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease a 9×13-inch baking pan.
  2. Mix flour, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt in a bowl.
  3. Cream butter and sugar until light. Beat in eggs and vanilla.
  4. Stir in grated apples. Gradually add dry ingredients.
  5. Fold in walnuts if using. Pour batter into the pan.
  6. Bake for 35-40 minutes. Cool completely.
  7. For frosting, melt butter and brown sugar. Stir in milk and powdered sugar. Spread over cake.
