- 1 3/4 cups granulated sugar
- 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1 tsp salt
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 cup hot water
- 1 tbsp black food coloring gel
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F. Grease and line two 9-inch cake pans.
- Whisk flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt in a large bowl.
- Add eggs, buttermilk, oil, and vanilla. Mix until combined.
- Slowly add hot water and black food coloring, mixing until smooth.
- Divide batter evenly between the pans. Bake for 30-35 minutes.
- Let cakes cool in pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack.
- Frost and decorate as desired.
Notes
- Use black cocoa powder for a darker color.
- Gel food coloring works best for deep black.
- Let cakes cool completely before frosting.
